The National Defence Academy (NDA) is India’s Premier Joint Training Institution, where cadets of the Army, Navy, and Air Force train together before moving to their respective service academies for further pre-commissioning training. NDA provides world-class training in academics, military tactics, physical fitness, and leadership qualities. Cadets who successfully complete the training move on to the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Naval Academy (INA), and Air Force Academy (AFA).

Eligibility Criteria

  • Age: 16.5 to 19 years
  • Qualification:
    • For Army Wing: 12th Pass (Any Stream)
    • For Air Force & Navy: 12th Pass with Physics & Mathematics
  • Gender: Boys (Girls in Pilot and Ground Duties in Airforce)
  • Marital Status: Unmarried

Exam Pattern

  • Written Examination: Conducted by UPSC Twice a Year (NDA I & NDA II)
  • Mathematics: 300 Marks
  • General Ability Test (GAT): 600 Marks
  • Total: 900 Marks
  • SSB Interview: 900 Marks
  • Selection Process: Written Exam + SSB Interview + Medical Examination

NDA Attempts (12 Appearances Info)

Students can appear for the NDA exam twice every year (April & September) between the ages of 16.5 to 19 years. This allows a candidate to attempt up to 12 times if they meet the basic eligibility criteria.

  • NDA I – Conducted in April
  • NDA II – Conducted in September
  • Maximum attempts depend on the candidate’s age at the time of application.
  • Thus, a candidate can appear a maximum of 12 attempts before the upper age limit.

  • Duration: 3 Years
  • Academics: B.A., B.Sc., B.Sc. (Computer Science), B.Tech (For Naval Cadets)
  • Military Training: Weapon Training, Drill, Horse Riding, Leadership Training, Physical Training, Swimming, Indoor/Outdoor Games, Adventure Courses
